Straight answers to the questions tradespeople ask about scheduling, P6, and the move from the field. Written by Tyler Babin, PMP.
How do you become a construction scheduler from the trades?
Learn critical path scheduling, get hands-on with Primavera P6, and use your field experience as your edge. Start by reading and questioning the schedule on your current job, build practice schedules for work you've installed, then ask for project controls exposure inside your own company before applying outside. Expect it to take persistence.
What does a construction scheduler (P6 scheduler) do?
A construction scheduler builds and maintains the project's critical path schedule: breaking the work into activities, tying them together with logic, setting durations, and updating progress every period. A P6 scheduler does this in Oracle Primavera P6. The real job is forecasting: telling the team what finishes when, and what threatens the date.
What is the DCMA 14-point assessment?
The DCMA 14-point assessment is a set of schedule-quality checks from the U.S. Defense Contract Management Agency. It tests a schedule's logic, relationships, constraints, float, durations, dates, resources, and progress against set thresholds. A failed check is a flag to investigate, not proof the schedule is wrong. Construction schedulers use it as a health check.
What is the critical path method, in plain English?
The critical path method (CPM) is a way to find which chain of work controls your finish date. You list the activities, tie them together in the order they must happen, give each one a duration, then add up every path. The longest path is the critical path: slip anything on it and the job finishes late.
How is AI used in construction scheduling in 2026?
In 2026, AI in construction scheduling mostly handles the grunt work around the schedule: reading P6 exports, checking schedule quality, flagging critical path changes between updates, drafting narratives, and answering questions in plain language. Some tools generate or optimize sequences. The scheduler still owns the logic and the forecast. AI speeds up the checking and reporting.
Primavera P6 vs. Microsoft Project: which is better for construction?
For large commercial, industrial, and public construction, learn Primavera P6. It's built for big, multi-project schedules and is what owners commonly specify. Microsoft Project works well for smaller jobs and teams already using Microsoft tools. If you're coming from the trades for a scheduling career, P6 opens more doors. CPM fundamentals matter more than either tool.
