I Was a Wireman

I'm a third-generation union electrician. I didn't plan on becoming a scheduler. The schedule just kept beating me.

I'd be running work, doing everything right, and still getting blamed for delays I didn't cause. Not because my crew was slow. Not because we didn't know the work. Because when the finger-pointing started, I couldn't prove where the time went. The trailer had a document, I had my word, and the document won.

That's a helpless feeling. You're standing there knowing the delay wasn't yours, and you've got nothing but your reputation to argue with. Reputation is a fine thing until it's up against a printed schedule.

So I did something about it. I learned Primavera. Earned my PMP. Spent fifteen years in project controls, twenty-five in construction all told. I learned the language the trailer speaks, and I'll tell you what: the day I could read a schedule better than the people in the trailer, my career changed.

It changed because I stopped arguing opinions. When a delay came up, I didn't say "that wasn't us." I said where the time went, which path it hit, what it cost. Facts. The conversation changed the day I brought facts to it.

It changed because I could see the job coming. I wasn't waiting for the update to tell me what happened. I could read the sequence, see the conflicts before they hit, and plan my crew around reality instead of rumors.

And it changed because nobody could hand me a schedule I couldn't read anymore. That helpless feeling? Gone. The document didn't beat me anymore, because I could read the document.

Here's what I want you to hear: nobody hands field guys this knowledge. The training goes to the office. The licenses go to the trailer. The field gets told to figure it out. I had to go get it myself, one painful lesson at a time, and it took me years.

You don't have to take years. The lessons I learned the hard way are the ones I'm teaching now, plainly, one technique at a time. No textbook. No forty-slide deck. The stuff you can use Monday morning.

I started as a wireman. The schedule beat me until I learned to read it. Then it became the best tool I ever picked up. It can be yours too.

If you want these lessons concentrated, that's what The Plan Room is for: the techniques in order, feedback on your own schedule, and a room full of people working through it alongside you. Free group on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/40982025/
